As part of their preparation for the upcoming 4×4 in Schools Technology Challenge, the Curtin Robotics Society recently visited Yas In Schools, a renowned innovation hub and STEM education centre in the UAE. The visit extended beyond collecting kits; it was an enriching experience offering insight into the competition’s legacy, environment, and inspiration.
Exploring innovation at the core
Upon receiving a warm welcome, the team was taken on a tour of the Yas in Schools workshops, which featured state-of-the-art facilities, including CNC machines, 3D printers, vehicle testing rigs, and collaborative workspaces. These workshops have played a pivotal role in supporting student teams throughout the region, and seeing them firsthand helped the Curtin Robotics members visualise their own design and development journey.

A key part of the visit included reviewing the terrain that will play a significant role in the upcoming competition. Observing the different surfaces and structural elements gave the team insight into the types of real-world challenges their vehicle will need to overcome.
Recognising the legacy
The visit also paid homage to the legacy of the competition through a display of previous national and international teams. Award-winning designs, team histories, and milestone achievements lined the halls; celebrating years of innovation and success. For the Curtin team, it served as both a benchmark and a source of motivation as they embark on their own challenge.

A glimpse into world-class motorsports
The experience was capped off with a visit to the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Standing beside one of the world’s most iconic racetracks was a surreal experience for the student engineers, many of whom are passionate about motorsport and robotics. It was a powerful reminder of how educational initiatives like 4×4 in Schools can be a stepping stone to global careers in engineering and motorsport.
