The Curtin Dubai Speaker Series aims to connect its community to industry experts from various fields. Through this forum, students are provided the opportunity to network with renowned individuals and learn from practical experiences that go beyond the classroom.

The Series takes place every few weeks and 2021 was concluded with a forum featuring Ms Busi Mabuza discussing “Leadership in a Post-COVID Environment.”

Ms Mabuza is the Director of Companies; Chairperson of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest development finance institution; and served as a Non-Executive Director on the IDC board of directors for many years. She is passionate about providing services to the private sector and supporting government-led initiatives to transform South Africa’s economic and social landscape. Her qualifications include an MBA from Leonard Stern School of Business at New York University and a BA in Mathematics and Computer Science, Hunter College, City University of New York.

Ms Mabuza captivated her audience at the Curtin Dubai campus with her countenance, wise insights, and relatable demeanor. She greeted each question with a smile and responded with a warm piece of advice, which drew the audience even deeper into what she had to say.

“I felt honoured to meet Ms Busi Mabuza. The overall session was outstanding. Receiving personal insight on post-covid leadership from an accomplished industry leader is an experience I will never forget. I understood the critical nature of gender equality and women empowerment in terms of recovering stronger from the pandemic as a result of this session. The other exciting aspect of the speaker series is learning about Ms Busi, her education, work, challenges as a woman in technology, and how she overcame them. I was given the opportunity to ask questions even after the session. This talk was also significant for me because it is the first face-to-face session with a speaker in a long time”, thoughts from one of our top Engineering students, Keerthana Sekaran.

Another student, Syed Hashmi, was equally pleased with the talk, stating, “Having a speaker of such stature to listen to and interact with is critical for students across the business field. I felt extremely fortunate to have interacted with her. Her perspective on how to adapt to the ever-changing world was very insightful. I’d like to express my gratitude to Curtin University for facilitating this.”
